Check-ups and care

How often to get your teeth cleaned: frequency, cost, what to know

Cleaning usually costs 150,000 to 550,000 VND at Ho Chi Minh City clinics. How often is the dentist's call, based on your gums. Sources at the end.

There is no single interval that suits everyone. Your dentist sets the next cleaning according to the state of your gums and how quickly tartar builds up on your teeth. “Every six months” is common advice from clinics, but the professional guidance we could read puts the gap between check-ups anywhere from 3 months to 2 years, depending on the person.

This article is by Dr Phạm Ngọc Diệp, BS.CKI (specialist level I, a postgraduate clinical qualification in Vietnam), who does check-ups, cleaning, fillings and whitening at An Nhiên.

What a cleaning is, and what it is not

Tartar (calculus) is plaque that has hardened, usually at the neck of the tooth, along and just under the gum line. A toothbrush and floss remove soft plaque but not the hardened layer. In a cleaning, often called scaling and polishing, the dentist removes that layer with dedicated instruments and then polishes the tooth surface.

A cleaning is not:

  • Whitening. Teeth can look cleaner once stains are gone, but the colour of the enamel does not change, and crowns and fillings keep their colour too. Changing tooth colour is teeth whitening, which needs an exam first.
  • Gum disease treatment. When the gums are deeply inflamed, a separate treatment plan is needed. The dentist will tell you if they see this and quote it separately before doing anything.

How often: what the sources say

Source What it says Type
NHS (UK), Dental check-ups The dentist recommends your next visit based on your oral health and risk; the gap can be as short as 3 months or as long as 2 years; up to 1 year for under-18s Patient guidance from a public health system
Cochrane review (2018) In adults without severe gum disease, routine scale and polish made little or no difference to early signs of gum disease over 2 to 3 years, compared with no scheduled cleaning. Six-monthly versus twelve-monthly: very little difference in gum inflammation, slightly less tartar at six months Two UK studies, 1,711 people
Peace Dentistry (a Ho Chi Minh City clinic) Recommends a cleaning every 6 months One clinic’s advice
Tâm Đức Smile (a Ho Chi Minh City clinic) Recommends every 3 to 6 months depending on the person One clinic’s advice

Read together, they say one thing: frequency is decided person by person. The Cochrane review only covered adults without severe gum disease, so it does not apply to someone whose gums are inflamed, who wears braces or who has implants; dentists usually want to see those patients sooner. If your gums are stable and tartar builds slowly, the gap can be longer than six months.

If you had a set routine with a hygienist at home, tell the dentist what it was. It is useful information, not a rule the clinic here has to follow.

What a cleaning costs in Ho Chi Minh City

Where Listed price Notes
Peace Dentistry 150,000 VND (standard); 250,000, 350,000 or 550,000 VND at three levels, both arches with polishing Priced by amount of tartar
Tâm Đức Smile 300,000 to 500,000 VND per visit Page dated 2 September 2025
Saigon Odonto-Maxillofacial Hospital 900,000 VND, scaling and polishing both arches Page dated 2 October 2026

These were read on 5 October 2026 and may have changed. Part of the spread comes from what each figure covers: one level or all levels, with or without polishing. Ask that before comparing.

At An Nhiên, scaling and polishing of both arches starts from 300,000 VND in a 45-minute visit, not including gum treatment if gum disease is found. That is a starting price from the price list updated on 4 October 2026, final after the dentist’s exam. Prices for every service are on the price list.

What it feels like, and afterwards

Honestly: a cleaning can feel sensitive, especially where the gums are inflamed or a root surface is exposed. The gums may bleed a little during the cleaning. You can raise your hand at any time and the dentist will stop. If it is very sensitive, say so; the dentist can pause, split the cleaning over two visits, or discuss a local anaesthetic with you.

Afterwards, teeth may be sensitive to cold for a few days, and the gums may bleed slightly when you brush for the first day or two. It differs from person to person. If bleeding will not stop, your face swells or you get a fever: call 0963 929 241 during opening hours; out of hours, or if breathing or swallowing is hard, call 115 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Chị Kiều Anh, 36, books a Saturday morning for herself and her son, bé Tôm, who is 7. She asks: “How often should the two of us come back?”

The answer is a separate date for each of them, written after the visit. The dentist looks at her gums and tartar to set her next visit. Tôm sees Dr Trần Hà My, BS.CKI (specialist level I); for under-18s, NHS guidance puts the gap between check-ups at no more than a year. His mother stays in the room for his whole visit.

How we do it at An Nhiên

  • Dr Diệp starts each appointment by asking what worries you most.
  • Before cleaning, she checks the gums. If gum disease needs separate treatment, she explains it and quotes it first; nothing extra is done without your agreement.
  • A cleaning is a 45-minute visit for both arches, with no deposit.
  • At the end, she writes down when you should come back, and why.

You can book a cleaning with Dr Diệp, read her profile, or see the teeth cleaning page. If it has been a while since your last visit, a 30-minute check-up (0 VND) is the place to start. How to check a clinic before you book is covered in choosing a dental clinic.
