Crowns: three materials

The three pairs above are line drawings, not photographs. Drag the slider (or use the arrow keys) to see a tooth before and after one step of treatment. They are here to show how a treatment works, not to show anyone’s result.

These illustrations show how a treatment works. They are not the result of any one patient. Results vary from person to person.

  • A filling. The first drawing shows a cavity on the biting surface; the second shows the decay removed and replaced with tooth-coloured composite. Steps, time and starting price are on the fillings page.
  • A cleaning. The first drawing shows tartar at the neck of the tooth, along the gum line; the second shows the surface after scaling and polishing. Cleaning does not change the colour of your teeth. Details are on the teeth cleaning page.
  • Braces. The first drawing is a crowded arch; the second shows the arch once the teeth have been moved gradually, following a plan. How long that takes is estimated by the orthodontist after impressions or a scan. See the braces page.

Why no real photos? Before-and-after photos of patients make it easy to assume you will get the same result, when every person’s teeth, bone, gums and habits differ. A dentist can only say what might happen to your teeth after examining them. Common questions about each service are on the FAQ page.
