[Payment plans](/en/payment-plans) ## What happens in the chair 1. **Exam and X-ray**30-minute examThe dentist examines the tooth, asks about health conditions and medicines, takes a panoramic X-ray or a CT if the tooth lies close to a nerve, and shows you the image. 2. **Risks explained, quote given**The dentist says whether the tooth needs to come out, how difficult it is, the risks and how they are reduced, and gives a written price. You decide whether and when. 3. **Removal**You get a local anaesthetic in the surgery room. You may feel pressure and vibration. If you feel a sharp pain, raise a hand and the dentist stops and adds anaesthetic. 4. **Stitches and aftercare**The dentist controls bleeding, stitches if needed, and gives you a prescription and written aftercare. Swelling, tenderness and a stiff jaw are possible for a few days. 5. **Review and stitch removal**You come back as booked so the dentist can check the socket and take out stitches if there are any. ## Who needs it, and who can keep their wisdom teeth The dentist considers removing a wisdom tooth when it grows at an angle and keeps inflaming the gum over it, pushes against or causes decay in the molar beside it, or the X-ray shows a problem around its roots. An upright wisdom tooth with enough room, that you can brush, often does not need to come out. The decision is made after an exam and X-ray, not from a description or a phone photo. The price depends on whether the tooth is upper or lower, upright, angled or impacted, whether the roots are curved or near the nerve, and whether the tooth has to be sectioned or the gum stitched. If a CT is needed to see where the nerve runs, the dentist tells you why before it is taken.
