The dentist draws the plan on paper, notes what is and is not included, and gives you a copy. 3. **Fitting ceramic brackets**Brackets are bonded to the front of each tooth and the archwire threaded through. For a few days teeth may ache when chewing and the brackets may rub your cheek. 4. **Wire adjustments**The dentist adjusts or changes the wire and checks cleaning around the brackets. With standard brackets, the elastic ties are replaced at each review. Reviews are included. 5. **Removal and retainers**The dentist removes the brackets, cleans off the adhesive and gives you one set of retainers to hold teeth in their new position. ## Who it suits, and who should look at other options Ceramic brackets suit working adults and students who want braces that show less, but still prefer a fixed appliance they do not have to remember to put back in. They can be used for many cases of crowding, gaps and protruding teeth. Ceramic brackets are usually a little bulkier than metal ones. In Dr Tùng's experience, the ceramic itself rarely changes colour, but the elastic ties on standard brackets can pick up stains from coffee or tea. The ties are replaced at each review. Self-ligating brackets do not use ties. ### Are ceramic brackets more fragile than metal? In Dr Tùng's experience, ceramic is hard but more brittle than metal, so avoid biting very hard food. If a bracket chips or comes off, phone the clinic to book a repair. ### Ceramic brackets or clear aligners? It depends on your case and habits. Aligners come out but must be worn enough hours every day; brackets are fixed, so they do not depend on you remembering. The dentist tells you whether aligners can work for you after impressions.
