An implant quote gains a bone graft or sinus lift line when the CT scan shows the jawbone is not tall or wide enough to hold a post. According to a round-up by the Vietnamese booking portal Medpro (updated 1 April 2026), Bệnh viện Răng Hàm Mặt TP.HCM, the city’s public dental hospital, charges 5 to 10 million VND for a bone graft or sinus lift. At An Nhiên Dental a bone graft starts from 5,000,000 VND and a sinus lift is quoted after the CT scan; both are final only after the dentist has examined you and read the scan.

Not everyone who has lost a tooth needs a graft. But if a tooth has been missing for a while, especially an upper back tooth, it helps to know about the possibility before the quote arrives.

## Why missing bone matters for the post

An implant post needs bone around it to hold firm, just as a natural root needs its socket. After a tooth is lost, the bone that held the root can become thinner and lower. The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) notes that gum disease or tooth loss can leave too little bone to place implants.

The upper back jaw has an extra issue. The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) describes how losing teeth there lets the bone thin out while the maxillary sinus expands downward. The bone left under the sinus can then be too thin to hold a post.

## What a bone graft is

A bone graft places graft material where bone is missing, so that your body gradually builds new bone there. Cleveland Clinic describes the graft as holding space so your body can do the repair work. There are four groups of material: your own bone, donor bone, animal-derived bone and synthetic material. The dentist chooses according to the gap and explains the choice before starting.

## What a sinus lift is

A sinus lift gently raises the membrane lining the floor of the maxillary sinus and fills the space beneath with graft material, to give the post more bone height. AAOMS describes two approaches:

| Approach | In short | When it is used |
| ------------------------ | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------- |
| Lateral window | A small window is opened in the side of the jawbone, the sinus lining is lifted and graft material placed | When a lot of extra height is needed |
| Through the implant site | A special instrument lifts the sinus lining through a small hole | When only a little extra height is needed |

According to the AAP, the post can sometimes go in during the same procedure. In other cases the graft has to heal before the post is placed. The dentist decides after measuring on the CT scan.

## The CT scan decides, not a guess

A Cone Beam CT (a cone-beam computed tomography scan, giving a 3D image of the jawbone) lets the dentist measure the height and width of the bone and the distance to the sinus floor or the nerve. Those measurements show whether a graft is needed, how much, and whether the post can go in at the same time.

So any implant quote given before a CT scan is an estimate. The graft line may appear, or it may not.

The price of a graft depends on how much bone has to be rebuilt, the material, and whether it is done separately or with the post. The written quote states each of these.

## How much longer it takes

A graft lengthens the treatment. The sources we read say:

- Bone graft: initial recovery of about a week; the graft needs at least about 3 months to heal, and large grafts 9 to 12 months (Cleveland Clinic).
- Sinus lift: usually 4 to 12 months before the post is placed, depending on the person (AAP); Radiopaedia gives typically about six months.

After that comes the wait for the post to fuse with the bone, and then the crown. The dentist estimates your timeline after reading the scan and writes it into the plan. If you expect to move away from Ho Chi Minh City, say so at the consultation, because the stages may span many months.

## How it feels, and when to call

You get a local anaesthetic first. The dentist asks how you feel and stops when you ask. Cleveland Clinic says tenderness, swelling and bruising after a bone graft usually settle within one to two weeks. Everyone feels it differently.

The same source lists possible complications: infection, nerve damage and bleeding. Tell the dentist if pain or swelling gets worse after the first week, or if you notice pus. In opening hours, call 0963 929 241\. Out of hours, or if breathing or swallowing is difficult, call 115 or go to the nearest emergency department; the clinic does not run an emergency service.

## An example: “If there isn’t enough bone, how much more?”

An illustrative case for this demo site; the person and figures are made up.

Mr Đinh Văn Phúc, 52, who lost a lower back tooth eight months ago, asks exactly this. The honest answer is: not known until the CT scan. If the scan shows a graft is needed, the quote gets one more line, from 5,000,000 VND, with the reason shown on the scan. If not, the line is not there. He sees the final figure on paper before deciding.

## How we do it at An Nhiên

- Dr Đoàn Minh Khôi, BS.CKII (specialist level II, a postgraduate clinical qualification in Vietnam), 18 years in practice, practising licence no. 000041/HCM-GPHN (fictional), takes the CT scan and talks you through it before quoting, in English if you prefer (fictional). See [Dr Khôi’s profile](/en/dentists/doan-minh-khoi).
- A bone graft or sinus lift is its own line on the quote; the quote is valid for 30 days.
- For implant surgery and bone grafts, a deposit of 20% of the quote, at most 5,000,000 VND, is credited to your bill and refunded if the clinic changes the date or you cancel more than 48 hours ahead.
- The whole implant quote is broken down in [How much a dental implant costs](/en/learn/dental-implant-cost-ho-chi-minh-city) and on the [dental implants page](/en/services/dental-implants). You can [book a 45-minute exam with Dr Khôi](/en/book?service=trong-rang-implant&dentist=doan-minh-khoi); the exam and consultation cost 0 VND.
